First Ski Resort Opening Dates for 2026-27: Colorado, Tahoe and Super El Niño

October is when ski resorts stop hedging about opening days and start publishing target dates. For 2026-27, the announcements are already out: Keystone wants to open as soon as possible in October, a group of Vail Resorts destinations is staggered from November 6 through December 4, and independent Lake Tahoe areas have set their own late-November windows. A Super El Niño is the wildcard that could push those dates earlier or later, and last season’s FIS results offer a reference point for early form.

Keystone and Colorado's opening chase

Vail Resorts said Keystone, Colorado, is targeting "as soon as possible in October" and hopes to claim the title of first North American resort to open for the second season in a row. Last winter Keystone succeeded on October 25, beating Arapahoe Basin despite less-than-stellar early-season conditions. The rest of the announced Colorado slate has Breckenridge planned for November 6, Vail Mountain for November 13, and Beaver Creek and Crested Butte for November 25. Those are planned dates, not guarantees; actual opening days depend on snowfall, temperatures and snowmaking capacity.

Tahoe and California dates spread across November

In Lake Tahoe, Vail Resorts has Heavenly and Northstar set for November 20, the same day Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe plans to open. Palisades Tahoe follows on November 25, Boreal Mountain Resort on November 27, and Kirkwood on December 4. Outside California, Vail's list includes Whistler Blackcomb and Park City Mountain on November 20 and Stevens Pass in Washington on December 4. The New York Post reported the dates arrive after destinations across California closed early last season when snowfall dried up. Bill Rock, president of Vail Resorts' Mountain Division, said in August: "It may only be August, but we’re laser focused on preparing our resorts to deliver the best and most differentiated guest experience in skiing and riding." The announcements do not yet include specific early-October snow totals, and each resort makes the final call.

Last season's alpine and snowboard form

On the alpine side, Laura Pirovano claimed the FIS World Cup downhill globe on March 21 in Kvitfjell with her third straight win, after two victories in Val di Fassa by 0.01 seconds each. She finished the final race 0.15 seconds ahead of Breezy Johnson and reached 127.15 km/h on the closing straight. At the Cortina d'Ampezzo snowboard Alpine World Cup in December 2025, the women's parallel giant slalom qualification was led by Miki Tsubaki with 1:15.21, ahead of Elisa Caffont at 1:15.77 and Sabine Payer at 1:15.99.

What the betting markets still need

As of October 12, updated 2026-27 winter sports futures odds have not been published in the official opening-day releases or FIS race summaries. When sportsbooks do post those lines, you can compare decimal odds across two or more outcomes or balance a back/lay position with commission using an arbitrage calculator. arbitrage calculator It also supports three-or-more outcomes and back/lay modes with commission.

A warm-weather contrast

If you are not ready for early-season turns, the Southern Hemisphere offers a different kind of October condition. Whangamata’s surf report tracks swell, tide and harbour-bar conditions on the Coromandel coast, a warm-weather alternative to the slopes.

Practical start-of-season checklist

Before booking, confirm each resort's own page, because early openings can be limited to a handful of runs. If Keystone does open in October, expect early-season terrain rather than full mountain access, and watch the FIS calendars for first Alpine and snowboard races as the new season begins. Keep your plans flexible until natural snow and snowmaking allow lifts to run on schedule.
