True Crime October 2026: New Docuseries and a Cold Case Arrest
Mid-October 2026 is bringing several true crime releases at once. HBO premieres a supernatural cold case, Hulu revisits a 2016 clown scare, and a Rhode Island courtroom arraigns a 61-year-old man in a 1985 killing. The overlap makes this a useful moment to separate the new titles from the legal developments, and to look at what streaming data and critics actually say.
The new October true crime lineup
Dexerto’s October preview lists The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story on HBO from October 11, a three-episode series about Dorothy Lou Thompson, a pet cemetery owner found chained at the bottom of the Mississippi River in 1985, and a witness who says he saw her ghost. Hulu and Disney+ share Clown Panic on October 12, which uses interviews with witnesses, law enforcement and clowns to trace how 2016 creepy clown sightings escalated into school lockdowns, police investigations and a nationwide media frenzy. Netflix adds The One About Matthew Perry on October 28, a three-part series built on interviews with the late actor’s family and friends. Other Netflix documentary releases in October include Schumacher ’94 on October 2, Lorne on October 5, Who Is Martin Mull? on October 7, The First Monday in May on October 10, Free Leonard Peltier on October 12 and Tyson on October 13. A Rhode Island cold case yields an arrest
On October 6, 2026, William Morton, 61, was arraigned in Newport County District Court and charged with one count of murder in the 1985 death of 22-year-old Hillary Hellewell. Court documents allege the murder occurred on or about May 19, 1985 in Newport. The original investigation went cold; in 2023 the Office of the Attorney General and Newport Police Department reopened it, using new forensic DNA analysis and investigative techniques to identify Morton as a potential suspect. He was held without bail and is scheduled for a status conference on October 20, 2026. Attorney General Peter F. Neronha said the Cold Case Unit exists “to find long-overdue answers for victims and their families” and added that the office has found answers in four previously unsolved cases over the past year. An indictment or complaint is an allegation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Michigan State Police put victims first
Michigan State Police said they have around 200 open cold cases at any given time. In September, during National Cold Case Month, the agency launched a website to highlight some of them; it currently lists 11 hand-picked cases, with more planned. Detective Sergeant Larry Rothman said detectives selected cases after contacting families to confirm they wanted their loved one listed, adding: “Our big focus is victim-centered and everything that we do, we wanna put the victim and the victim’s family first and foremost.” Among the cases are Ruth Postif, a 17-year-old who disappeared on October 18, 1973 and was found stabbed more than three weeks later; Mary Alice Ellicott, last seen leaving the Polar Bear restaurant on October 11, 1981 and found dead around two weeks later; and Alcona Dam Jane Doe, found on October 26, 1994 and still unidentified. Such ordinary details are one reason cold case work can hold attention; for a gentler rabbit hole, the full history of catsup follows the condiment from 17th-century China to American tables.
What streaming data and critics say
Quartz reports that Netflix’s own engagement data ranks the true crime titles that dominated viewing from January through June 2026, and notes that cumulative view counts reward longevity: a title that arrived in January had nearly half a year to accumulate audience data, whereas one arriving in mid-year had less time. StudioBinder’s best true crime documentary list says the strongest films transform the audience into active participants, compelling viewers to weigh evidence, question authority and confront how stories are told and by whom. Its all-time picks include Making a Murderer as the genre-defining Netflix series, The Thin Blue Line as the best feature and Dear Zachary as the most emotionally devastating. How to follow these cases responsibly
When a cold case leads to an arrest, the legal record remains the most reliable source. An indictment or complaint is an allegation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Official updates from agencies such as the Rhode Island Attorney General and Michigan State Police carry more weight than social media speculation, and they are the best place to watch for the next court date or newly listed case.
